Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, celebrated around the world during October or November. This year's celebrations were held in Northampton on 19th October.
Diwali is officially celebrated on Sunday 27th October 2019 for 5 days.
Diwali is a very colourful festival, full of lights, fireworks and food. The festival coincides with the Hindu New Year and celebrates new beginnings. Lights are lit at home to allow the Hindu goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, inside so she can bring wealth, good health and prosperity. People of all ages light little clay lamps and celebrate with their family and friends during this festive season.
Our ceramics department has been making tea light holders for the occasion, an idea suggested by service user, Neeta. Neeta is involved at Workbridge each week and celebrates Diwali every year with her family.
Neeta said: “I love the colours and the lights. I bring sweets in for everyone [at Workbridge] to celebrate. Coconut is my favourite!”
Leanne, vocational skills instructor in ceramics said: “It was Neeta’s idea to make tea light holders for Diwali. We think it’s great because it makes people aware of the festival and everyone who attends our department can have a go. It’s nice to be able to make something different”.
