We were proudly crowned the Independent Cafe / Tea Room of the Year at the prestigious Carlsberg Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2017/18.
As part of the judging process, Louise Ellis-Lane, a Vocational Skills Instructor at Workbridge, and Darren Ross, a service user who works in the coffee shop, attended a ‘bake off’ event where they baked a cheddar cheese scone and a white chocolate and raspberry cake for the judges.
The panel recognised that Workbridge is different to other brilliant eateries in Northampton, with many of the people who prepare and serve the produce, and contribute to the warmth of the coffee shop, being patients from St Andrew’s Healthcare or community service users. The 200 people who access Workbridge every week do so to develop their work and life skills while building confidence and making new friends in a supportive environment.
Just days before Harry and Meghan tied the knot at Windsor Castle, our coffee shop staff and service users created an award-winning cake fit for royalty, which was named the Royal Showstopper of the Year at the Carlsberg Northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards 2018/19.
The cake was decorated to signify change, new beginnings, hope and life.
It featured a delicious amalgamation of flavours – a traditional rich fruit cake for the bottom tier; an American chocolate fudge cake with silky peanut butter filling, encased in chocolate ganache and fondant icing for the middle tier; and a light and fluffy lemon cake with local lemon curd and a Swiss meringue butter cream for the top – designed to celebrate the intertwining of two hearts and two nations.
