Get to know the wonderful people who make up the Workbridge family! Ben Murray joined Workbridge a month ago as a Vocational Skills Instructor. As a qualified chef, Ben is teaching our service users catering and baking skills in our training kitchen here at Workbridge.

 

Hello Ben! What led you to choose Workbridge and how are you enjoying the new role?

I've liked cooking all my life. I originally trained as a graphic designer but it was hard to find work without moving to a large city like London. So I worked and studied part time where I obtained my chef qualification. I worked in kitchens for a number of years, baking, preparing, and cooking up meals to serve to customers. What attracted me to this role was the interaction with different people every day.

It’s great. I don’t know where the time has gone!

Can you describe a typical day?

Every day is different! We begin most days making cakes and sandwiches for the coffee shop and cooking meals from a weekly menu for staff and service users to enjoy at break times. The training kitchen supports the Workbridge coffee shop with their supply of cakes, paninis and sandwiches. I’ve also recently added custard tarts to their customer menu. The objective is to start people here and introduce them to catering before joining our coffee shop.


If you were cooking for yourself, what meal would you make?

My favourite meal I like to make is steak, chips and salad.


What plans do you have for the training kitchen in your new role?

We teach skills already but I’d like to create a curriculum that people can follow and put on their CV at their end of their time here.

What do you enjoy outside of work?

My hobbies are music and the gym. I play the guitar and drums at home!
